Fundraising helps the department upkeep our teaching and laboratory spaces, equipment, resources, events, etc. to serve UNC Biology students and further their education.
Jenna K.'s description of their design: "Since middle school, I recall repeatedly learning about the cell and its structure at least five times. Mitochondria are the powerhouse of the cell, and the nucleus is the cell’s brain—some analogies taught in previous science classes were engraved into my memory. Along with these analogies, copying cell diagrams from the internet or textbooks has always been an effective memorization tool. Inspired by these study strategies, I decided to create my own version of a cell for this project. Lucky Draw: The Animal Cell presents an animal cell reimagined as a gacha capsule filled with real-world analogies of its organelles. Each component within the ball represents a cell organelle and its function, with its miniature details achieved with colored pencils. The vibrant color scheme and simplified drawings of some organelles in the background add a playful touch to the artwork. The capsule includes the cell membrane, nucleus, rough endoplasmic reticulum, cytoskeleton, Golgi apparatus, mitochondria, lysosomes, ribosomes, vacuole, and peroxisome. Can you tell what represents each?"
Jennifer Y.'s description of their design: "I chose to create a digital artwork that combines DNA strands and animal cells because I am very interested in genetics. I took a genetics course last semester that inspired me to explore these biological concepts through art. For this project, I first made rough sketches to plan my idea. I decided to draw an octopus with eight tentacles, but instead of normal legs, the tentacles are DNA strands. Around the octopus, I included bubbles that represent animal cells. I chose digital art because drawing on iPad allows me to easily add layers, details, and colors. The biology shown in my artwork focuses on the connection between organisms, cells, and DNA. The octopus represents a living organism, while the DNA strands symbolize genetic information that controls traits and biological processes. The bubbles around the octopus represent animal cells, which are the basic units of life. I also drew the different organelles such as the nucleus, mitochondria, ribosomes, ER, golgi apparatus, and lysosomes. Each organelle has an important function that helps the cell survive, such as producing energy, building proteins, breaking down wastes, and more. By combining these elements together, my artwork shows how life is organized in layers, from DNA to cells to organisms."
Lillie W.'s description of their design: "The Catawba rhododendron (Rhododendron catawbiense) is a flowering shrub native to the Appalachian Mountains of North Carolina. It is an evergreen known for its large, leathery leaves and clusters of showy purple-pink flowers that bloom in late spring to early summer. Biologically, it plays an important role in mountain ecosystems by providing nectar for pollinators such as bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds. Its adaptations to cool, acidic soils and high elevations make it a key indicator of mountain forest health and biodiversity. I chose a barn quilt because they are a traditional form of Appalachian folk art found throughout the North Carolina mountains. My family is from the Appalachian Mountains, and my grandmother has painted many barn quilts for farmers in North Carolina. Earlier this year, my mom and I continued that family tradition by painting a barn quilt together, which inspired me to incorporate this art form into my project."
Sydney B.'s description of their design: "I was inspired by the repetitive patterns of epithelial cells, specifically simple cuboidal epithelium. I wanted to recreate their patterns in a simple art style that could highlight the beauty of their structure and colors. I also thought it was really fun to be able to create art of microscopic cells by using large pieces of potatoes as my stamp."
Xiomara O.'s description of their design: "How would you define biology? What does biology make? What makes life? These were some questions I asked as I was creating this piece. For me, biology is a bunch of aspects of our world, from the smallest things like atoms, to the complex structures of human anatomy. So why not make something that can represent multiple fields of biology. Doing my art digitally since it offered a wide range of colors and art tools that could be easily accessed as compared to a physical medium. As for the aspects of the art, the skeletal system is my favorite system in the human body and is an aspect of my future career, which was why it became my centerpiece. The other elements such as the animals, DNA, atom, microscope, textbook, plants, and insects, were each different fields of biology that I knew formed the functions of life in our world and wished to be able to represent. My inspiration for my work is my love and respect for each field of biology that constantly change the way we all perceive and understand our world."
