The proceeds generated from purchasing this item will go to fundraising for the Department of Biology at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Fundraising helps the department upkeep our teaching and laboratory spaces, equipment, resources, events, etc. to serve UNC Biology students and further their education.
Abe K.'s description of their design: "I thought I would create something around the general theme of discovery as the inspiration and driving force behind science. Because I am doing research in a microbiology lab right now, I thought it would be neat to theme my drawing around the discovery of microorganisms. The depiction of Leeuwenhoek, father of microbiology, is entirely based on Ernest Board’s A. Van Leeuwenhoek (1632-1723) Inventor of the Microscope. I wanted to depict discovery as a sort of halo or shining light, and for that I looked at Tintoretto’s Last Supper and Albrecht Dürer’s Madonna Crowned by One Angel. Surely they are rolling in their graves now. I additionally wanted the halo to evoke the image of a eukaryotic cell with all the little animalcule drawings as organelles, but I don’t think that worked out so well. But it was a lot of fun to make."
Bianka N.'s description of their design: "I chose to make a project about photoreactivation because it seemed like an interesting concept that I hadn’t heard about before. Flowers typically undergo photoreactivation. What is depicted is a DNA molecule undergoing photoreactivation as photolyase (blue flowers) repairs the thymine dimer (cluster of purple flowers) that resulted from UV light exposure. The roses at the top depict 600 nm light that causes photolyase to repair the DNA damage."
Carmen R.'s description of their design: "I chose to create my piece around SSRI drugs because I personally take them and wanted to better understand how they work after learning about them in my anatomy and physiology class. My painting shows a girl holding a yellow umbrella, symbolizing the person taking the SSRI and experiencing the protection and balance that comes from prolonged serotonin activity. The black drips in the background represent anxiety, depression, and outside stressors, while the umbrella shields her from them. I used paint and collage to merge emotion with reality, combining expressive visuals with real escitalopram labels to show both the personal and medical sides of the experience. This piece reflects how SSRIs can act as a form of shelter, offering a sense of calm and safety in the midst of inner storms."
Gabrielyn M.'s description of their design: " I wanted to talk about the human microbiome and how it is also alternatively referred to as the human microflora. I chose this topic since microorganisms are often stigmatized by a more general public, wherein bacteria, viruses, and fungi are put into the umbrella of what defines a germ. However, we science-inclined folks come to realize that everything has microorganisms, and that we have our own environment of microbes that help us maintain a normal and even healthy body. I like the phrase, “human microflora,” since I believe that we should often talk about the human microbiome in relation to the maintenance of a healthy body, and referring to it as “flora”, often associated with flowers, is a great way for the more general public to be more open to learning and exploring them in a positive light. I believe that by allowing people to discover that a lot of the microorganisms that exist with us aren’t as harmful as we thought can allow us to take progressive steps towards addressing and improving the research that goes into the microbiome and allow us to inform them of how to take better care of their microbiome tailored to them individually! Creating art digitally allowed me to use multiple references to accurately represent the anatomy of the human body."
Jacqueline A.'s description of their design: "Bioluminescence is one of the most beautiful phenomena on this planet, and I’ve always been fascinated with the idea that some organisms can produce their own light without heat. I wanted to artistically represent this phenomenon through a unified color palette to emphasize cohesion across the various uses of this singular chemical reaction. I was inspired by the natural beauty of this reaction and chose to represent it through a digital drawing because of the vast choice of brushes available to me in the digital space."
