This tote bag features artwork from a UNC Biology student as part of a BioArt assignment. The proceeds generated from purchasing this item will go to fundraising for the Department of Biology at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Fundraising helps the department upkeep our teaching and laboratory spaces, equipment, resources, events, etc. to serve UNC Biology students and further their education.

This artwork was created by Amelia C., Class of 2027, and is titled "Synaptic Constellations." The description of the piece is below:

"Synaptic Constellations explores neuronal communication and synaptic connectivity within the brain. Inspired by my interest in neuroscience, the piece reflects how thoughts, learning, and behavior emerge from networks of neurons that form and reorganize through synaptic plasticity. Using watercolor, I depicted neurons with branching dendrites and elongated axons that extend to form synaptic connections with neighboring cells. At these synapses, electrical signals trigger the release of neurotransmitters, allowing information to pass from one neuron to the next and move through the network. This continuous flow of communication enables the brain to process and integrate complex signals across interconnected pathways. 

The composition also reflects synaptic pruning, a process in which weaker or less-used connections are eliminated while stronger pathways are reinforced, improving the efficiency of neural networks. This dynamic is represented visually through variations in color and intensity. Bright, warm tones represent highly active neurons and strong connections, while darker, cooler tones indicate weaker or less active pathways. Together, these elements portray the brain as a vast, evolving system that resembles a galaxy, where neurons appear as stars connected through intricate, constantly changing pathways."

Care instructions
- Remove all items from the bag before cleaning. Suggested to pretreat visible stains with stain remover. Mix warm water with laundry detergent and clean the bag with terry washcloth or a soft bristle brush. Let the bag air dry.
