This artwork was created by Lily W. and is titled "Framed Cells." The description of the piece is below:

"I chose to present the three general distinct types of cells (animal, plant, and bacteria) in a way that “frames” them as art in and of themselves. I have always thought that biology at the cellular level was beautiful. From learning about the inner workings of different cells in my first general bio classes in high school to learning about ways to visualize those inner working through different types of microscopy in college, I have always thought that seeing something unseeable is incredible. Both the visualizing methods and the sight of the cell itself are things that not everyone gets to see/experience. I took this project literally. This is bio art in the sense that it is the building blocks of biology presented as art. I took this literal route because, as I mentioned, these cells are art. I also wanted to take this opportunity to embrace some of the first things I ever learned about biology: the organelles in cells. Additionally, choosing this intro level topic allows me to portray an introduction to biology in a beautiful way for individuals who may not have been introduced to biology before. I viewed this as a sort of extension of our focus on communication to a non-science audience. Perhaps this framing of biology could interest more people in science and get them curious about our cells! Lastly, I chose to present this art on paper using pencils and colored pencils to allow the cells themselves to shine rather than the media. I wanted it to be done simply and coherently so viewers could see the art within the cell!"
