5-Pack Greeting Cards (SET 1) - Featuring Unique Artwork from UNC Biology Students

This set of five greeting cards (blank insides) features artwork from UNC Biology students as part of a BioArt assignment, including the name of each student on the back of the card. The proceeds generated from purchasing this item will go to fundraising for the Department of Biology at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Fundraising helps the department upkeep our teaching and laboratory spaces, equipment, resources, events, etc. to serve UNC Biology students and further their education.

Nathan R.'s description of their design: "Learning about how ATP functions in AP biology in my sophomore year of high school was a defining moment in my decision to pursue my biology major. The seeming simplicity of simple atomic force repelling the last phosphate from the rest of the molecule and creating energy, then turning that energy into one of the foundations of life is such a beautiful thing to me. It lights in me a desire to not only ask what is happening around us, but why and how. I chose to depict such a fascinating piece of life in painting to express some of the strong sentimentality I have around it. A very basic outline was drawn of a simplified model of the molecule in order to allow me to do this. From this sketch, each color was filled in corresponding to the appropriate element composing it. On either side of this poem lies a short poem meant to intermix both some of the defining characteristics of ATP and some of the more grandiose roles it plays in our cells. After this, red paint was splattered onto the canvas and in some sections roughly painted. This color Is meant to represent blood, as I oftentimes find myself drawing parallels between the ATP in our cells to the blood in our veins. Both cornerstones of our biology that we might not ever truly appreciate or think about, however, without them, we would simply cease to be." 

Scout C's description of their design: "I chose to draw this picture in particular because people disassociate from nature now more than ever. It is essential to be able to enjoy the beauty of the outside world and that it is okay to relax. I believe this is especially important with everyone at UNC; we are all trying to learn, but that can be done in more ways than one. It is perfectly fine to take a breather and be exposed to the surrounding world."

Nadiya C's description of their design: "I was inspired by our study with lipid droplets using Image J in which I loved how vivid and detailed the produced images of the droplets were. I decided to incorporate this technology to explore more lipid droplets and to create a digital art piece. The fluorescent and bright colors reminded me of an otherworldly dimension, so I decided to play with this idea in this piece."

Torrent M's description of their design: "The sun sets on the 2020 pandemic, doomed to rise once again in another one hundred years."

Klara J's description of their design: "I aimed to capture the complexity and beauty of melanoma by transforming a piece of melanoma under a microscope by turning it into an ocean scene, blending my passion for the sea with my interest in medicine. The color and textures of the painting represent the layers of the skin and the almost fluid-like spread of melanoma cells, reminiscent of ocean currents. I chose this topic because I am drawn to understanding how diseases like melanoma affect the body on both a surface and microscopic level. By merging my two interests into one, I expressed the science behind cellular structures and the beauty of natural patterns."
